Stories: If you're thinking of going to
China, you might enjoy these snippets on some of the places likely to be visited
by participants in the TJSL China program.
Hangzhou:
This is where the program is located; an ancient Chinese capital, with plenty of
things to see and do... If you spend every free afternoon sightseeing, in three
weeks you'll have hit many of the highlights.
Putuoshan
and Shaoxing: Shaoxing is Hangzhou's near neighbor, an hour or two
(depending on how you travel) to the east along the shore of Hangzhou Bay.
Putuoshan is an island off the coast; travel time from Hangzhou is at least five
hours, making it far even for a weekend trip, but a nice end-of-session
excursion.
Shanghai:
Shanghai is to Hangzhou as Los Angeles is to San Diego. An easy weekend
trip from Hangzhou by train or bus.
Zhouzhuang:
An hour's drive from Shanghai; also a feasible weekend excursion from Hangzhou.
Beijing:
Not close to Hangzhou at all, but your flight to and from Hangzhou may change
here, and if it does, make sure to add a stopover.
There are a lot of other great excursions
possible from Hangzhou; for the links above I just looted stuff I'd already
written. Other nearby places that would make great weekend trips are
Suzhou, Taihu, and Tiantaishan. Excursions a little further afield, but
well worth the effort if you have the time, are Yandangshan and Huangshan.
(Actually, I know I've written something about Huangshan, but I can't find it at
the moment.)
