Iron Mountain |
||||
Introduction: Iron Mountain is located on the outskirts of Poway, off of Highway 67. There are two entrances, one from 67 and one off of Ellie Lane. The entrance from Ellie Lane offers the greatest challenge. Iron Mountain is a 9-mile course with long inclines. It's possible to do the entire loop and come out at highway 67. If you're lucky and the city has refilled the slot with maps, you will be able to take one and use it to track your progress. Most of the time, they are gone.

Directions: From I-15 go east on Poway Road until you get to highway 67. Turn left on 67 and turn right on Ellie Lane. Park in the dirt on the right hand side. In the 2000 Thomas Guide, find Ellie Lane on page 1171, D7. Use 15100 Highway 67 for the address on any online map service.

Specifics: The view is breathtaking on a clear day. Take at least 40 ounces of water and wear sunblock. This hike is not recommended midday during the summer. The entrance directly off of the 67 has a port-a-potty a short distance into the trail while the Ellie Lane entrance does not. The bushes are the bathroom facilities for those who really have to go; just be aware of the poison oak. |
