F.O.T.N. (Fractal of the Night) 17 Apr 1998 (Original Argument)

We don't know exactly how long Dr. J and Dr. E have been married. There could have been time compression occurring in the Fracto-Space/Real World interface. But I doubt it has been too long. Dr. J is still obsessed with fractal origins. And now his first argument with the Mrs. is over origins. Let's tune in and see what it is about...

She is explaining, "Our origin has been traced back to our Creator, Dr. Benoit Mandelbrot, about 20 years ago."

"I don't believe it!" Dr. J replies. "We have been around a lot longer than that. I think we are Mathematical Spirits and have been around a very long time, maybe forever.  Ever heard of Julia?"

"Sure, but talk about Mathematical Spirits. Julia had no idea what his 'Spirits' looked like. All he had were some formulae and crazy ideas," she retorted.  "We must look to our Creator, Benoit Mandelbrot for guidance. If he had not printed us out on that sheet of paper, we would not be here!"

"You mean if we are not displayed on someone's computer screen or a calendar, we don't exist? Non-sense," Dr. J yelled. "I iterate, therefore I am!!!"

"I believe in Benoit Mandelbrot! I believe in Benoit Mandelbrot! In Benoit Mandelbrot! In Benoit Mandelbrot!" Dr. E chanted.

"IBM! IBM! IBM!" Dr. J mocked.

"You would not be iterating at all if it weren't for that IBM machine you are in right now!" she replied.

"There has got to be a scientific explanation to our origins. I must continue my laboratory experiments to find out!" And Dr. J headed for his lab.

"You will never find it there. It is a matter of history!" she said as she spread her arms in exasperation.

As Dr. J stormed out of the house, all he could think about were his origins and the letters I.B.M. running though his brain. What did they stand for? No one knew. Some said it stood for the meeting of thought and matter, others claimed it was Intel + Benoit Mandelbrot = Fractals. No one knew for sure, but Dr. J would find out, if it were the last thing he did!

Can you settle the argument for Dr. J? Are fractals forever? Was there a beginning? How does I.B.M fit in?

Stay calm,
Jay

The parameter and formula files for Fractint are included below. Copy them into a quickie.par file for quick loading into Fractint. For longer term use, copy the frm: block into a FotN.frm file. But this time leave off the 'frm:' part.  Then copy the rest (the par parts) into your FotN.par file.
