After cutting the wood, I coated them with several layers of polyester resin -- the same resin used for fiberglass. The cut-away corner of the shim was needed because of a lump in the hull's fiberglass right at that point. In the pictures in the prior page, you can just barely see this lump under the far corner of the template. Each shim also has 4 grooves cut in them that follow the ridges along the bottom of the battery box.
Each corner of the battery box is attached to the shim with 4 wood screws. I covered all the screw heads with chalking so any spilled battery acid wouldn't eat away the metal.
