I know that Morris (whose Yiddish name was Moische) lived in the Ukraine and fought in the Tsar's army, as many Jews were forced to do, and he left around the turn of the 20th century. As you can seen, Poland was part of the Russian Empire (and abutted the Ukraine) at that time, so it's possible they lived there. All I know is that my father said his family lived in a town called Polonov near the Polish border (which was very different in those days), which was destroyed during WWI. We were always told that the Kniagers may have originally come from Austria. My parents were related on their maternal sides. Bertha's mother died when she was a child and her father remarried. His second wife bore him 3 more daughters, the first of whom was my mother's mother, Fannie. So their mothers were half sisters. My maternal grandfather came to NY to get settled. He bought up property in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn and then sent for his family. I believe that they'd all left the Ukraine together before my grandfather came here -- my mother was either born in the Ukraine before they left, or in Antwerp. My grandmother and mother arrived in NY in 1911 (she was born in 1909). My grandmother gave birth to a son just before they set sail, but the infant boy died en route. She bore 2 more children -- another daughter, Etta, who lives in Hollywood, FL (she'll be 91 in April) and a son Joseph, who died in the 60's. My parents met when my father came to NY as a young man, and their relationship was forbidden, so they dated secretly. It shook up the family when they married. Morris and Bertha did not speak English. I'm not sure how well they communicated with non Yiddish-speaking persons. An example of this would be that until my father was 57 years of age, he believed he was born on January 14, 1909. Then he learned that he was actually born on December 29, 1908. He was born at home, delivered by a mid-wife; his parents were only familiar with the Jewish calendar so had no idea of the Julian calendar date on which he was born. DIAMOND, Sidney, Aug. 17, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OBITUARY FOR SIDNEY DIAMOND DIAMOND, Sidney Diamond, 72, Ph.D., of Seabrook Beach, New Hampshire, died Wednesday, August 17, 2005, at Portsmouth Hospital in Portsmouth, NH of renal failure. He was the beloved husband of Anita (Mandell) Diamond, to whom he had been married fifty years. Born in Brooklyn, New York, January 6, 1933, he was the son of the late William and Ida S. (Kniager) Diamond and received his degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, and his PhD from the University of Illinois, after being valedictorian of his Manchester Central High School class of 1951. For the last 15 years Dr. Diamond was a Senior Technology Manager in Advanced Materials for the US Department of Energy, contributing to a wide range of initiatives including the 80 mpg car, malleable ceramics, fuel ionization and other innovative technologies. Dr. Diamond counted multiple patents and hundreds of technical papers and disclosures as his legacy, and was particularly proud of his recent developments to improve fuel economy of the United States commercial trucking fleet. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David Diamond of Westborough, MA; and Ari Diamond of Kfar Saba, Israel; two daughters, Beryl Diamond-Chacon of Wilton, CT; and Jodi Diamond of Sedona, AZ; one sister, Deanna Farrah of Beverly Hills, MI; and Bernice and Sidney Golder (sister-in-law, and brother-in-law) of Boynton Beach, FL as well as eight grandchildren.
