John Scrivener, the first immigrant ancestor of our branch of the Scrivener Family, was born about 1625 in Kent County, England and came to Hamton, NH before 1652. He moved to Dover, NH in 1662, where he was a large landowner and a person of
influence.
He married Mary Hilton and they had five children; John, Edward, Thomas, Elizabeth, and Samual. His will is dated November 27, 1674 in which he bequeathed to wife Mary and children. He died October 2, 1675 at Dover, NH.
Is is in about the last quarter of the 17th century, 1675-1695, that Dover and Exeter town records and Hampton church records show the Scrivener Family adopting the present spelling, Scribner.
