"Frank,

"I just found your photos of the 58 Sebring race and laughed out loud when I saw the fuzzy photo of the "car with tail fins". You see that very car is sitting in my shop. It's #53 Carl Hass (the Lola guy today with Paul Newman), or Alan Ross in a 1957 Stanguellini Bialbero Sport 1100. The car was entered with money backing from Carl Kiekhaefer of Mercury outboard. It took 4th in class behind 3 Lotus cars.

"I bought the thing about 20 years ago not knowing even how to pronounce Stanguellini and have been working on it and collecting information about it ever since.

"As far as I know, only 4 sports racers came to the U.S. One in about 1954 Driven by Sandy McArthur, a 1956- 750cc Campana bodied car, which won its class at the 1957 Sebring race; My Campana bodied car the 58 entry, and the 1959 Scagletti bodied 750cc that was wrecked in a rain storm at the 59 Sebring race. (the body now in Louisiana, motor, running gear in Wisc.)

"Please tell me how I can get copies of any photos you may have of this car. There is one of it being passed by Moss in a DB3S that was in the papers and magazines. I would love to find a copy of it. Until tonight I have never seen another photo of it in the 58 race.

Jim sent more pictures. This is at Road America June Sprints, 1960, second owner Clem Johnson at the wheel. Also on the scene was an H-modified Stanguellini that won its class at Sebring, 1957.

Here's the car (S/N SC*01120*) with Alfa wheels. Under that voluptuous body are a 1300 Alfa rear end and brakes, and a 1438cc full-race Fiat 124 engine (one of four different powerplants known to have been used over the car's 45-year racing history). This is the configuration when Jim raced it in vintage events in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and California, during the 80s. In November, 1988, it was a Sports Cars Illustrated centerfold, with accompanying story about Stanguellini's effort to produce sports racing cars.

"Here is the original Stanguellini Motor SN#CS0135. It was last with the car in about 1967 and no one I've spoken with knows what happened to it. Maybe just a note on the site will stir something up. Thanks for your help. Jim"

"This is a photo of Herm Behm who was the U.S. distributor for Stanguellini. The car is a Stanguellini Bialbero Sport 750 and the class winner at the 1957 Sebring 12 hour. It was driven by Herm Behm, Sandy McArthur, and Carl (Haas).

Herm Behm died within a year of this photo and his wife Jane sold the car to John Wetherbee from Milwaukee, WI who raced it around the upper midwest.

If anyone knows where this car is, I would like to get in touch with the owner as I have several photos of it during and after the Sebring race."
