"a":  In a still-vacant field, roughly graded and apparently a favorite BMX bike area. This would have been a parking lot during the Raceway's heyday. We came here along the perimiter road at the north edge of the shopping center, past the parking structure that shows up as a relatively fuzzy white square ESE of the "a".

I was not well-oriented when we first arrived. The terrain west of the road is elevated and I wanted to place Turn Six much closer to the tall, strong sign that is faded and otherwise discolored but seems sturdy. There is a slope east from the base of a small mesa that sprouts the sign. For a time I thought this decline corresponded with the NASCAR road (not represented on this diagram) connecting the northernmost reaches of Turns Six and Eight.

I also wanted (still want) to place those Turns closer to Highway 60. I think the potential mismatches among reality, memory, photography, and drafting may have wiggled around to exaggerate that distance in the red-line representation. I remember there being just a bit more than a two-lane-road-and-a-parking-lane-width between the back of the Six grandstands and the fence next to the freeway, but a fair-sized (?-row) parking lot north of Eight.

There are five green
carats in the "a" and "b" area. Each links to a view oriented approximately in the direction of its wide end. The message that appears when you hover the cursor over a link is a short description of the view you will see if you click.

HotSpot: Click to view RIR sign from the vacant lot. Box Springs Mountain (915 meters) and the cars on Highway 60 receive prominent display. See the mesa? Is that an indication of how much earth was carved away from the top end of the property? Was the carving part of the new visage, or was it done earlier?

HotSpot: view to the northeast, more cars, a corner of the parking structure, and in the distance some snow-capped peaks.
