Saturday, March 24, 4:00 p.m. Rock & Roll wins the 2001 Melges 24 US National Championship with a strong second place finish in the final race. The other five boats that had an almost even chance of winning the regatta faded in the final race. Today's racing was held on the Coronado Roads course outside San Diego. Race 7 was held in 6 to 10 knots, and the final race was in a nail biting 6 to 4 knot condition. The winners of the top three positions are all Amateur Owner Drivers, besting many leading professionals, who frequently dominate the class. Check the results for more details. Friday, March 23, 7:00 p.m. Full Throttle exploited the lake like conditions in South Bay to take the lead after six races. Dave Ullman is close behind in second place. Check the results for more details. We raced three races in 11 to 17 knots of wind from the northwest. Some downwind planing was seen, and the windward and leeward marks were eventfully crowded. Each race got started with a I and Z flag, penalizing early starters with around the ends and 20% penalty points. Dave Ullman suffered that penalty in race 5, The Rajewski/Maseda combine in boat 248, was given redress of an average of race 4 and 5, to score 7.5 points in race 6. The event should be exciting tomorrow as places 2 thru 6 are separated by only 4.5 points and they are all within 8.5 of a championship win. Schedule of 2001 National Championships
