Nestled atop Cafe Orleans,
above the hustle and bustle of New Orleans Square at Disneyland,
sits Club
33 . This luxurious, private club, long the
hideaway for visiting VIPs, is a place of mystery for most guests to the happiest
place on earth.
Guests enter the club by the inconspicuous door at 33 Royal Street. A tiny bell
buzzes the formally attired attended who admits only those with reservations to
the exclusive club. Decorated with red velvet, marble, and guilded mirrors, all
set in a rich, dark wood, the Club
33 entry works to convince you you've stepped back in time to an elegant
New Orleans far from the confines of Disneyland.
A tiny glass elevator takes guests up the middle of the winding stairs to the
main floor where a host or hostess greets you and shows you to your table.
There are two dining rooms in the Club, separated by a long lounge-like area.
One side of the lounge holds what appears to be a piano where black keys are white
and white keys are black. But actually this instrument is a harpsichord(Thanks
to a viewer for correcting me here). Paintings of the Pirates of the Caribbean
and Haunted Mansion fill the walls, while tall windows look down on the busy street
below. The opposite side of the lounge is where the Buffet is set up. Food ranges
from lobster to lamb, caviar to jell-o, and water to wine. An array of mouth watering
deserts(how about a chocolate maccaroon Mickey?) awaits those still hungry after
the delicious feast.
The main dining room is simple yet elegant. Several paintings of early Pirates
of the Caribbean concepts fill the walls where windows leading onto balconys aren't.
Servers are proficient and personable. Easily falling into joking banter or serious
business. Since the non-smoking laws in California the personalized matchbooks
on the table have been replaced with matchbooks filled with tiny sheets of Club
33 paper.
The second, smaller dining room reminds one more of adventure, with paneled
walls and interesting light fixtures. Cameras and/or microphones used to (are
they still?) be hidden in the hanging fixtures and guests could talk with a
mysterious host during the meal.
Mickey and Minnie attend the Club on occasion, usually to help someone celebrate
a birthday or special event, and if it's your birthday be sure and tell them
early so they can prepare a special, rich and delicious chocolate souffle.
