blessing for Lars on film no. 392,6 2 CONC 75. 2 CONT 2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: HISTORY OF LARS NIELSEN (1834 - 1920) 2 CONT Written by Lujean Putnam Dunn 2 CONT 2 CONT Lars Nielsen was a stern Danish pioneer and avid missionary for the Church according to wha 2 CONC t his descendants can interpret from his sparse journal writings and his grandchildren’s memo 2 CONC ries. He was born September 15, 1834, at Taars, Hjorring, Denmark to hard-working parents, N 2 CONC iels Larsen and Elsa Maria Abrahamsen. Church records show that he was converted and baptize 2 CONC d by missionaries as a single young adult on September 20, 1854, but his parents did not joi 2 CONC n the Church. A little over a year later he was married to Sara Marie Jesperson on Februar 2 CONC y 8, 1856, in Flade, Denmark. By July of 1859 he and his wife were parents of two children 2 CONC : the first was Josephine Birghamina who died one month after birth, and another daughter, Zi 2 CONC pporah Elizabeth, who was now one year old. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1859 at age 25, Lars began keeping a journal written in very small script and short senten 2 CONC ces squeezed together to save space and paper, which leads me to believe he was a very focuse 2 CONC d man of less than moderate means. 2 CONT His writings were all of travel and work in his calling as Branch President for the Church. 2 CONT 2 CONT The first journal entry reads: “1 July 1859: Went to Skive, Ilskov and Nybro. Talked to Hoik 2 CONC er. Stayed overnight.” He detailed in terse little entries his work with the Danish peopl 2 CONC e in such entries as “Went to Skive. Talked to Chr. Christensen. He was not a Christian, di 2 CONC d not keep Sabbath holy. 2 CONT ” On July 4 he wrote: “Prayer meeting at Maren Jensen’s Rosendige. Chr. Christensen was ma 2 CONC d and did not want to be a Mormon.” Then on the following Sunday we find: “Went to Aalborg 2 CONC , meeting at Karen M. Jensen’s. Baptized Chr. Christensen.” This is followed by a Sunday Ju 2 CONC ly 18 entry: “Bro Chr. Christensen was excommunicated today.” But it turned out alright, a 2 CONC s we read on: “Monday, December 13. Met with Chr. Christensen at Froderup. He confessed an 2 CONC d was humble. Asked to be a member again. We granted his wish ... 2 CONT baptized him at Dahl Mill and confirmed him.” 2 CONT 2 CONT Most entries began on a Sunday and continued through each week in one paragraph: “Sunday, Oct 2 CONC . 10: When to Ravnshoj to Conference. Baptized sixteen. Niels Wilhelmsen, F.F. Klingbah, Pr 2 CONC es. in Aalborg, were present. In evening walked with Bro Klingbah and Bro J. Larsen from Rho 2 CONC ld to Bro C. Jensen’s Gronholt to break fast and pray. Monday to Dahl Mill. Wednesday, walk 2 CONC ed to Ilskov to teach Bk of M school. Saturday, Conference in Aalborg, Council met in evenin 2 CONC g.” 2 CONT 2 CONT He detailed carefully the full name and parentage of each child he blessed or baptized and ke 2 CONC pt meticulous records of Church affairs. He was so busy traveling, administering and teachin 2 CONC g for the Church, I wonder when he was able to farm and take care of his own family. His en 2 CONC tries about his personal life or feelings were few, stark and simple: “March 27, 1860. My wi 2 CONC fe had a baby girl.” and “April 5, blessed my daughter with name Lily Sophronia Nielsen.” 2 CONT He fathered nine children and the longest entry about them read: “My wife had a baby boy, wa 2 CONC s well again in two days.” or “My wife had a baby boy, was sick long after time.” He kept t 2 CONC o the bare facts. 2 CONT 2 CONT In January of 1861 the journal told of their preparations to emigrate to Zion. Lars was rele 2 CONC ased as Branch President of Dronninghued when his passport came on April 8, 1861. On April 1 2 CONC 8, he carefully detailed the gifts of love and help his branch members gave to the family: “T 2 CONC o the journey: Peter Havesimen -- a plaid coat and clothes for children; Vijbye -- a coat an 2 CONC d ten dollars; my wife -- one rigsdaler; Christian -- one rigsdaler; Sine Sofie -- eight rigs 2 CONC daler; Maline Pedersen -- twelve feet of cotton; Margrethe K. Olsen -- sewed [something]”, et 2 CONC c. The total came to 16 rigsdalers, 34 [U.S.] dollars, 2 coats, cloth for underclothing an 2 CONC d one muffler. 2 CONT 2 CONT So they left Aalborg, Denmark on May 8, 1861 and sailed by way of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Ha 2 CONC mborg, Germany to Liverpool, England where they started for America on Thursday, May 16, 186 2 CONC 1 on the ship Eugenia. Their big problem seemed to be food rations as his journal reports: “ 2 CONC Wednesday, May 22. Today we finally got some food -- a little meat, 5 potatoes, mustard, vin 2 CONC egar and pepper.” They must have lived on gruel and seasick powders for the first six days b 2 CONC ecause the journal notes their sickness. Then on Thursday, May 23: “We were issues 3/4 gallo 2 CONC n water (daily ration), 3 1/2 pound bread, 1 pound flour, 1 1/2 pound barley, 1 1/2 pound ric 2 CONC e, 1 1/2 pound peas, 1 1/2 pound meat, 1 pound fat, 2 pounds potatoes, 2 packages tea, 1 poun 2 CONC d sugar, 1/2 package mustard, 1 package pepper, 2 packages salt and some vinegar.” This ha 2 CONC d to last them for the month until they docked in New York on June 19, 1861. 2 CONT 2 CONT The United States was poised on the brink of the first big battle of the Civil War at Bull Ru 2 CONC n, so railroads were crowded with troops and supplies being sent to Washington, D.C. The Nie 2 CONC lsen journal tells of the many tranfers to different trains and boats they had to make to ge 2 CONC t to Florence, Nebraska, the Mormon staging point for wagon trains. Lars recorded: “July1 2 CONC . We got our wagon and salt. I bought 4 oxen and 1 horse. Drove out 2 miles to another pla 2 CONC ce where we got food.” The long journey was the usual record of difficulties and deaths. Hi 2 CONC s August 2, 1861, entry reads: “Inger Marie Thomsen died about 300 miles from Florence. Wa 2 CONC s buried by Schonk Creek north side of road.” I found later that she was his second wife. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Nielsens had work waiting in Salt Lake and shared a home with good friends for the winter 2 CONC , which helped them get started. Lars was soon deeply involved in Church work and was direct 2 CONC ed to settle in Box Elder County [Utah] by Spring of 1862. There five children were born. M 2 CONC y own grandfather’s birth entry was sandwiched in the tiny journal on “Nov. 1865: Jan had a h 2 CONC eifer calf. Jan is my cow. Mailed letter to Thomas Steffensen. Received one from my sister 2 CONC . Wife had a baby boy who received name, Lars Peter. 2 CONT Bought six sheep and ten chickens. Sold my house and bought another in Box Elder.” 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1869, Lars had married another wife, sent money to Denmark to bring his widowed mother ove 2 CONC r to join the Church, and become a member of the Stake presidency. In 1870, Lars entered i 2 CONC n his journal: “I traded place with Soren P. Jespersen and moved to his farm in Huntsville ea 2 CONC st of Ogden on July 12.” The family remained there to see the children grow and progress. T 2 CONC heir names appeared often in records of civic and church activities. Lars Nielsen died there 2 CONC , 13 February 1920, sixteen years after his first wife, Sara Marie. He was buried in the Hunt 2 CONC sville Cemetery by his son, Lars Peter, who was sexton of the cemetery for over 50 years. 2 CONT 2 CONT the journal wore out with age and reading, and several front pages were lost, but his son, La 2 CONC rs Peter, always treasured the history of his roots. 1 CHAN 2 DATE 15 AUG 1999 3 TIME 19:07:11 0 @I3649@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah Marie /JESPERSEN/ 2 GIVN Sarah Marie
