* What is it?  The San Diego Volleyball Hash is a chapter of the Hash House Harriers that gets together to play uncompetitive beach volleyball at Mission Bay in San Diego. The Volleyball Hash isn’t like other hashes because we don’t run trails, but it’s mostly hashers who play, we have beerchecks during the games, and we sometimes have down-downs afterwards.  The Volleyball Hash is a lot of fun and you’ll see many of your San Diego hash friends there, especially the non-runners, so come join us on the beach as we give our legs a rest from running and work our arms instead.  Don’t worry if you can’t play volleyball, neither can we!

 When is it?  The Volleyball Hash is every Thursday evening (rain, hail or shine) from the start of daylight saving time (mid March) until mid September.  Volleyball games start at 5:30pm but you don’t need to worry about getting there late because we don’t go anywhere until we’ve finished playing, which is usually just after the sun sets.

* How much is it?  $2

* Where is it?  On the beach at Mission Bay, at the south end of Everts St in Pacific Beach.

* What should I bring?

$2 (this contributes to balls, boundaries, bags, and the end of season party)

Shorts and T-shirt to play in (you won’t need shoes to play)

Sunglasses (you probably won’t need sun block)

Normal clothing to go out afterwards

Your favorite flavored Gatorade or other thirst quencher (NO GLASS on the beach)

 What else do I need to know?

It is illegal to take open alcohol to the beach, bay and nearby parks

It is illegal to smoke on the beach but not on the boardwalk

Remember:  DO NOT bring glass containers onto the beach

Balls and boundaries are provided by the Volleyball Hash

Bring snacks if you want, but expect to share them

* What do we do afterwards?  We go for dinner and drinks in PB.  Free and easy parking is best found south of Grand Ave.  Some of our favorite bars in the area include PB Bar and Grill, The Dog, Nicks at the Beach, Cass Street Bar & Grill, and many more!  Be warned that you could end up waking up in PB the next morning!

* How do I get there? The Volleyball Hash always plays on the beach at Mission Bay, at the south end of Everts St, near Fanuel Park in Pacific Beach (Pacific Beach is known by San Diegans as “PB”).

* Step by step instructions for hasher half-minds on how to get there…

From the Interstate 5 freeway in San Diego

If going South, take the BALBOA AVE/GARNET AVE exit (EXIT 23).  If going North, take the GRAND AVE/GARNET AVE exit (EXIT 23A)…

You will automatically merge onto MISSION BAY DR

If going South, CONTINUE through FIVE sets of traffic lights, then TURN RIGHT just before the next lights onto GRAND AVE.  If going North, TURN LEFT at the first lights onto GRAND AVE.

CONTINUE WEST on GRAND AVE for 1.8 miles.

Turn LEFT onto FANUEL ST (you’ll notice the cross streets are in alphabetical order).

CONTINUE along Fanuel St and through the traffic lights at Pacific Beach Dr.  You’ll see Fanuel Park ahead on your right.

Park your car in the lot by Fanuel Park, or find parking on nearby streets.

Walk onto the beach and you’ll see the volleyball courts between the South ends of Fanuel St and Everts St.  Look for hashers drinking beer

* Off-season information

During the volleyball off-season from late September to early March, the hard core volleyball drunks and PB locals still get together on Thursday nights for food and drinks.  You can catch up on news and find out where they’re going by visiting the group site…

                   … or simply click this image to join the group and get the emails:

Thanks to Barbie Biker Bitch there’s also a volleyball group who play on Saturday afternoons during the off-season.  This is a small group of people who are serious about playing volleyball, so don’t waste their time if you just want to jerk around.  If you’re interested, ask Barbie about the Saturday volleyball and how to get info about when and where it’s happening.

* What is “The Green Flash”?  It’s not a myth or an illusion, but a real phenomenon caused by refraction of light as the sun sets.  If you watch the sunset at the beach in California, you may be lucky enough to see the elusive “Green Flash”.  Sometimes it occurs just before the last sliver of the sun disappears over the horizon, while at other times it occurs on the mirage above the sun.  In both cases it only lasts for a couple of seconds.
