San Diego OS/2 User Group Mailing List

About our mailing list

The purpose of the mailing list is to distribute announcements of interest to our members, and also to provide the group a means of communication between the meetings. We expect that the main traffic will be announcements about meetings, particularly if there is a last-minute change. It's also a place to inquire if someone else in the group has experience with a particular piece of software or hardware you're considering purchasing, or to suggest a topic for a demonstration or meeting.
We expect the volume of traffic to be low.

Anyone who is interested can join the mailing list by following the subscribe instructions below. However, we reserve the right to ban people from the list if they fail to adhere to our rules of conduct.

Rules Of Conduct

  1. Please refrain from any racial, religious or sexist jokes or slurs.
  2. Personal attacks will not be allowed. Stick to the issues.

Host Change

Originally the list was hosted on a machine at UCSD. This became impractical, so on August 11, 1999 we moved to Onelist.com. The new server brings improved speed, a web-based archive, and the option of subscribing & unsubscribing via a web interface. Unfortunately it also brings advertising at the bottom of each message, which we put up with because the most important attribute has been maintained: it's free. So far the advertising has been unobtrusive.

If you were subscribed to the old list your subscribtion was transferred to the new list.

Using the Mailing List

Web-Based Interface

This is the easiest way to subscribe or unsubscribe. You can also stop messages temporarily, for instance if you'll be out of town for a while. Go to http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/os2-sdcs. If you have never signed up for a Onelist mailing list before you will need to register (it's free); if you already have a password from another mailing list you can use that.

To access the archive or change your options, you can go to http://www.onelist.com/ & log in. This will take you to the page showing the list(s) you subscribe to. The "List Center" link leads to the archive.

Email-Based Interface

There are separate addresses for each command. Just send an empty message from the e-mail address that you want to subscribe or unsubscribe.

Sending mail to the list

To send mail to everyone who subscribes to the mailing list, simply send your mail to
os2-sdcs@onelist.com

How does the mailing list work?

This mailing list is implemented using a listserv. A listserv is an automated mail repeating program. It recieves mail from a particular address, in this case os2-sdcs@onelist.com. When it receives a message, it takes that message & resends it to everyone on its list. The list is created by people subscribing, as shown in the instructions above.

There are thousands of listservs on the Internet, on almost any topic you can think of.
